Eddie Knightley roared with anger and threw the laptop into the corner of the room where it smashed into a thousand pieces.

He’d received a call from the owner of the bookies, telling him that they were unable to proceed with the sale on account of ‘new information’ coming to light.

He offered them twice the price, but it was clear that the owner was not going to budge. No one wanted to be seen getting into bed with a crook.

And the call had ended abruptly before Knightley could offer anything else.

All of the men wisely cleared out of the room, not wanting their boss to turn his wrath on them.

He sank into the chair, trying not to let despair take him.

It was like the world didn’t want him to succeed. He briefly thought about his volatile nephew who had been primed to take over the business at one point but had become too difficult for Eddie to control, so Eddie had had him killed. He wondered if everything that had happened since then—Detective Inspector Olivia Austin dismantling his original business in Newquay, his relationship with his son breaking down, struggling to get a grip on Bedford’s underworld, DS Jeff Rowan playing him for a mug, and Leah West thwarting him at every turn. It was like karma for killing his nephew. It was like he was cursed.

His phone started ringing, and Eddie almost threw the phone over to the other end of the room along with the broken laptop. But he saw that the number was withheld and decided to answer it, thinking that there wasn’t much more that could go wrong in his life.

“What?” he asked, hoping that the agitated tone would intimidate whoever was on the other end of the line into not screwing with him.

“Hello, Eddie,” a young voice came through, far too young for anyone hardened by a life of crime. But there was one person with such a voice.

“Dano,” he growled, wishing he could reach through the phone and strangle the woman.

“You know, this is all your fault we’re in this mess,” the young woman continued, enjoying the control of the conversation. “I had left all this behind. I focused on having something resembling a life. I was definitely no threat to you. I was good, until you dragged me back to this freakshow, threatened my sister, and killed my handler.”

“I did you a favour, you little bitch,” Knightley spat, pacing up and down the room. “You honestly think you would have lasted long in the ‘real world?’ Let me tell you; you would have made it a few months before you realised how fucking inept you are at being like everyone else. And you would have decided to go back to contract killing just to have a steady income because the alternative would have been stacking shelves. And God knows you don’t know how to do anything else.”

He was surprised by the strain it put on him to let loose all that pent-up venom.

“Have you finished?” Suzie asked, stifling a yawn.
